Here's a funny cycle-breaker method indirectly inspired by a private
discussion with Colin Champion. I'm not proposing it in practice, but it
would be an amusing thing to put in a story:
- Before the election, every candidate states how long his term of
office will be if he's elected. There's a maximum term limit.
- The election is conducted.
- If there's a CW, the CW wins at the fixed maximum term.
- Otherwise, any candidates who wishe to withdraw do so.
- If there's still a cycle, then the Smith set candidate with the
shortest offered term of office is elected. (Optionally, that candidate
can't stand for the next election, to limit troll candidates with
one-day term shenanigans.)
In essence, the candidates bid for the right of tie odds. Perhaps I
should call it Armageddon, like the chess format :-)
